Kristin Osterbaan was born March 24, 1948, in Murray, Utah to Charles Ray Long and Jean Elizabeth Keele Long. She was the third out of ten children. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she held many different church callings, including ward chorister, and Relief Society teacher and, always enjoyed being a member of the choir.
