A Memorial Service will be held for Katie Myrle Dougherty, 88, of Coos Bay, at 3:30 PM, Friday July 18, 2025 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3355 Virginia Ave, North Bend, Oregon under the direction of Nelson’s Bay Area Mortuary. Inurnment will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Coos Bay.
Katie Dougherty, born February 13, 1937, in Miami, Florida. passed away in Coos Bay, Oregon, on June 23, 2025 at the age of 88. Mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, mother-in-law and lover of dogs; Katie was the founder of a family of over 30 souls, thus far.
She was raised and educated in Miami where she met and married her husband, Jim Dougherty. As young marrieds, they moved to New Jersey, then Rhode Island, and finally retired to spend their lives on Garrison Lake in Port Orford. When Jim passed away at a young age, Katie came to Coos Bay and lived here for most of the next 26 years with a seven-year adventure in between living near her sister in Michigan.
In Oregon, Katie loved walking on the windy beaches, in any kind of weather, while collecting agates and sea glass. In Port Orford, Battle Rock Beach was a daily venture. Katie read mystery novels daily and enjoyed cooking meatballs and making her favorite Morning Glory Muffins to share with anyone who came to visit. Caring for family was surely her life’s work.
Katie was preceded in death by her much beloved parents, Kate J. and Max D. Wise. She is survived by her son Danny Dougherty with wife HaeSoon and son Aki; her daughter Alice Dougherty with her three daughters, Sara Garcia with husband Matthew, Susan, and Sally; and her daughter Kathy Barber with husband Charlie and sons Jared with wife Jess, Ryan with wife Angela, Jason, and Colin with wife Melanie. Katie also had 16 great-grandchildren: Taylyn, Jaycob, Jayson, Bryson, Zachary, James, Cambrielle, Casey, Natalia, Owen, Nyah, Ian, Ezra, James, Isaac and Luke. Katie will be terribly missed by her sister, Ruth Zimmerman and niece Ruth Zarate with her husband, Frank.
